New Lead Paint Regulations
Used throughout the 1900s, lead-based paint was banned for residential use in 1978. If your house or apartment was built before 1978, it is likely that lead paint is present. Lead dust in the home is caused by chipping, peeling, flaking or deteriorating lead-based paint. Different than household dust; lead dust is often invisible and exists in the cleanest of homes. Even when buried under new layers of lead-free paint, it can still cause serious health problems.
In January of 2010 the EPA guidelines changed requiring contractors to be certified in lead-safe work practices and as of this month the "opt out" provision once offered to property owners has now been eliminated. Any contractors hired for renovation, repairs, and painting jobs in houses or child-occupied facilities built prior to 1978 must, before beginning work, provide a copy of EPA's lead hazard information pamphlet Renovate Right: Important Lead Hazard Information for Families, Child Care Providers, and Schools.
The EPA has made an impressive amount of information readily available on their website with downloadable pamphlets, lessons, brochures for parents, teachers, students and anyone interested in learning more: Links to these sites are: http://www.epa.gov/lead/.
